Still Relevant?

(1913 cartoon on the dictates of fashion from the old “Life” magazine.)

I was playing around on the internet this morning and found this 1913 rendering of Gibson-style girls.  The thought crossed my mind – this sort of devil-in-fashion still holds true today.  Doesn’t the fashion world CONTINUE to tell us what shapes are acceptable – especially when clothing shape is used to echo and enhance body shape.
A little background for you:  The Gibson Girl is often considered one of the first recognized “standard” beauties.  With the introduction of the S-shaped corset, she was slim, but hourglass-ample through 1907.  She was tall, with a pile of loose curls or chignon, slender facial features, and continued towards a slimmer silhouette through 1913.  How many of those seemingly antiquated standards of beauty are standards we still find on runways and magazine covers today?

Interesting, to say the least.
