Oh Macabre Soldier of the Avant Garde

-You will be missed.

Nobody’s runway material has ever been quite as striking as McQueen’s “enfant terrible” act. His designs mirrored the dark, East End feel of his roots, and the tailored know-how of his time on Savile Row.

His boyish face told nothing of the turmoil within, though his runway looks often emulated the whirling destruction that seemed to lurk behind that visage.

A glittering cranium here, the remnants of a bird carcass there and macabre tweets: “Angels and Demons”. There are no words that can truly pay penitence to the man who gave us his inner experience – fashion as macabre runway art-form.

Your grief is now our own, dear artist.  An icon is lost.  Today the skies cry down rain.
